Yashima Wetland Trekking Course

Course circling the Yashima Wetland, one of Japan’s most renowned highland wetlands

Yashima Wetland (Yashimagahara Shitsugen) Trekking Course circles around Yashima Wetland, Japan’s most renowned high-rise wetland.

Designated as Natural Monument (Cultural Property), Yashima Wetland is a treasure trove of precious bog plants and animals, including 18 kinds of sphagnum moss. The course follows an easy trekking trail where you can stroll along the promenade while appreciating the beautiful scenery and precious plants.
The walk takes about 1.5-2 hours.

1
On a clear day, the water of the pond reflects the sky, clouds and mountains, creating a beautiful mirror effect. The total area of Yashima Wetland is 43.2 hectares and the whole circumference is about 3.7 km. Even if you walk slowly, it doesn’t take much to make a round. Let’s walk slowly while enjoying the wetland.
2
Yashima Wetland is beautiful on a clear day, but when misty it also shows a moist and fantastic beauty. Even if it is foggy in the morning, it often gradually clears up, so if you are lucky, you may be able to enjoy both fine and foggy weather.
3
The promenade around the wetland is well maintained, and you can enjoy trekking safely. Take a leisurely stroll while discovering the beautiful mountains in the distance and the animals and plants on both sides of the path.
4
Promenade surrounded by a variety of plants
As you walk along the promenade, there are spots where you can see the entire wetland from a distance, or up close, allowing you to enjoy the vast wetland from various perspectives.

You may be fascinated by the beauty of distant scenery such as wetlands and mountains, but please don’t forget to take a look at your feet as well.
The plants that decorate the wetlands are also one of the highlights of Yashima Wetland. Beautiful pale thistles were blooming on the day we took the picture.

If you want to appreciate the plants and animals, we recommend you to visit from early spring to summer. Daylilies (Nikko-Kisuge), a representative flower of Kirigamine, bloom from June to July.
Although the number of plants decreases after early autumn, the wetland dyed with gentle warm colors gives out pleasant autumn vibes.

Yashima Wetland Trekking Course lets you walk along the promenade and appreciate the invaluable plants and breathtaking scenery that only a highland wetland can offer. When the weather is clear, you can revel in the contrast between the blue sky and the wetland, and when it is foggy, the place changes into a mystical marshland. You will witness various expressions of Kirigamine depending on the season, time and weather…. Since there is a fine path and the walking distance is not long, the course is perfect for couples or families trekking together. If you are confident in your physical strength, we recommend further walking to the top of Mt. Kurumayama or to Kirigamine Plateau.
