"Utsukushinotou Tower is the symbol of Utsukushigahara Highland.
Since Utsukushigahara Highland is often clothed with thick mist and thus has caused many deaths, Utsukushinotou Tower was built to serve as an evacuating tower equipped with fog-bell.
It was built in the center area of Highland in fall, 1954 and rebuilt in 1983.
With the height of 6 meters, it's the largest literary monument in Japan. To the south is Utsukushigahara Volcanic Plateau admired by the nature poet Kihachi Ozaki who loved Utsukushigahara Highland very much. And to the north is buried the relief of Shunichi Yamamoto's face, which was created by Shunsuke Kamijyo, a sculptor from Matsumoto City.
Thanks to Shunichi Yamamoto, cottages and hiking trails were set up. He was highly praised as an unparalleled great man who succeeded to make Utukushigahara and even Yatsugatake-Chūshin Kōgen Quasi-National Park well-known."
