Ashida Joshi (former castle site)
Ashida castle is one used in the latter half of Japanese campainging era that represents Tateshina-cho, with its structure well reserved, renowned prefetrue-wide. The castle is situated on the half-independent hill, 806 m high, to the east of Komachi (old city), registered officially in Simodai. The bird view of it is rather round, with the remnats of its moats by the perimeter is about 300 m, with the hight difference amounting 40 to 60 m. The caslte has its almost rectangular main bastion on the top, surrounding by levels of walls, resembling Tsumagome Castle in South Kiso. Its advantage actully lies in its north side; to the east is two levels under the main part with, a moat away, the reverse L-shaped outside bastion equipped; its further outernal double firm moat extending to the old villages it once dominated. In the current site are many roads for cars to be visited by many tourists, with a magnifient view to have been designated as the historcial site for the town in 1967.
